PTPTN defaulters told to pay up
General secretary of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Dato’ Sebastian Ting urged National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan defaulters to pay up as the Government need the cash flow to assist future deserving poor students.
Ting when interviewed by Sarawak Tribune, said that those who had been working and can afford to pay should do so as their family members or their relatives may be the one who need the support from PTPTN to continue their studies.
He said in the next year there will be 50,000 students who need the PTPTN to continue their future study and the amount paid by the defaulters was not enough to help out these students, he added.
Urging the defaulters not to be selfish but to do their part after they had benefited from the Government, Ting said it is better to pay up voluntarily than to have more stringent rules imposed by the government in the future.
The PTPTN Chairman, Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah had said recently that there were 173,985 borrowers who had not started financing their loans, three years after graduating. He had warned that they would be listing loan defaulters in the Central Credit reference information system.
Shamsul had warned that due to the low number of payment, PTPTN would soon run out of funds to assist needy students.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, when tabling Budget 2015 in October had said borrowers could expect a 20% discount if they repaid their loans in full by March 31, while borrowers who made continuous payments for 12 months till Dec 31, 2015 would be entitled to a 10% discount.
