Wilfred Yap urges strict respect for public right to lodge police reports
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called for strict adherence to the public’s right to lodge police reports, stressing that this fundamental right must be respected and protected at all times.
He said recent statements by the leadership of the Royal Malaysia Police, including the Inspector General of Police, have made it clear that police officers cannot refuse to accept reports from the public under any circumstances.
Yap said the importance of this principle was highlighted by a recent case involving a vulnerable resident in his constituency.
The individual, an OKU, is caring for four underaged children while his wife is unemployed, with the family relying entirely on monthly welfare assistance to survive.
He said he personally assisted and accompanied the individual to lodge a police report, which was required by Bank Simpanan Nasional to open a bank account.
The individual had earlier attempted to lodge a report to facilitate the continuation of his RM450 monthly welfare aid, after his account was closed due to complications linked to inactive accounts in other banks that were allegedly flagged for mule account activity.
“In cases involving vulnerable individuals, any delay or refusal to accept a police report can have serious and immediate consequences on livelihoods. Lodging a police report is a fundamental right and an essential step in ensuring that assistance reaches those in need. No one, especially the most vulnerable, should be denied this right,” he said.
Yap added that any attempt to refuse, delay, or discourage the making of a police report is unacceptable and may constitute a breach of duty.
“Public confidence in law enforcement depends on accessibility, transparency, and professionalism. The police must remain approachable and responsive to all members of society, regardless of background or circumstance,” he said, reiterating that directives from the Inspector General of Police affirm that no individual should be denied the opportunity to lodge a police report.
He said he remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that no one is left behind, especially those most in need.
