SUPP Honours Wong Soon Kai and Voon Siak Fah with Saati Awards

The late former Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai and party veteran Voon Siak Fah were honoured today with the Sarawak United Peoples Party Saati awards, the highest recognition given by the party.

Dr Wong received the Saati Lifetime Loyalty and Dedication Award posthumously. His widow, Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Dr Jane Yong Sau Kan, aged 99, accepted the award on his behalf.

Although known as the wife of a former party president, Jane Yong played an important role in helping SUPP reclaim its three Sibu shop lots in 2017. She served as a key witness despite being physically unwell at the time.

Displaying her characteristic humility, she said the honour belonged solely to her late husband and accepted the award only in his name. She will turn one hundred this coming Lunar New Year.

From the Siniawan Branch, Voon Siak Fah, also known as Voon Sei Hwa, aged 91, received the Saati Lifetime Loyalty Award.

Voon joined SUPP in August 1959, just eighty five days after the party was formed. He holds one of the earliest membership numbers, 0329, marking sixty six years of loyal service.

During Sarawak’s politically challenging period, both Voon and his wife were detained as political detainees. After his release in 1980, he returned immediately to continue serving the party.

His devotion was further reflected by his care of the Siniawan Sub branch plaque, which he kept safe in his home for decades after the sub branch became inactive. The plaque was returned to the branch this August in an emotional ceremony.

Deputy Premier and SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian presented the awards during SUPP’s Annual Delegates Conference at the party headquarters.

The conference gathered delegates from across Sarawak to discuss current issues and plan the party’s direction for the future.
