Sarawakian BN MP as Education Minister

It’s time to let a Sarawakian BN MP to hold the post of Education Minister to bring a real transformation to our national education system, said Michael Tiang, the secretary for SUPP Pelawan Branch.

Tiang, in a recently issued press statement, said that since the formation of Malaysia, we had 18 Education Ministers, and out of the 18, 16 ministers were from UMNO. Tiang said, it is clear that  the position of Minister of Education was traditionally reserved for UMNO candidates. Nevertheless, Tiang said after 52 years of the formation of Malaysia, the Ministry is not making much advancement in solving some long outstanding education issues like the recognition of Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), the financial and local teacher needs for schools in rural interior in Sabah and Sarawak, the obvious missing part of the history about the formation of Malaysia in school syllabus, as well as the frequent changes in school syllabus which always caused common confusion and grievances among schools, parents and students.

Therefore, Tiang urged the Prime Minister that it is time to consider a Sarawakian candidate for the position of Minister of Education on the following compelling grounds:

(1) A Sarawakian education minister will have a better understanding in fulfilling the needs of schools in rural interior, especially those in Sabah and Sarawak;

(2) A Sarawakian education minister is more capable of compiling a comprehensive history of the formation of Malaysia in our school syllabus so that our next generation will truly appreciate the efforts of our founding fathers in building this nation;

(3) A Sarawakian education minister will not have any political or racial baggage in transforming and establishing our education system. Tiang stressed that, without such political and racial baggage, the Ministry will be able to set priority in retaining young talents in this country, particularly in pushing forward and expedite the recognition of UEC by the federal government which is a very urgent agenda;

(4) Likewise, a Sarawakian education minister will also be more capable in strengthening the English language as the learning medium in schools so as to the strengthen our young talents in the global market.
