Dr Sim Kui Hian Pleased with Desa Wira Flood Mitigation Progress
The first phase of the Desa Wira Flood Mitigation Project in Batu Kawa is 60.4 per cent complete, 13 per cent ahead of schedule, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
“The 1.4-hectare retention pond can store over 30,000 cubic metres of water, easing flash floods and serving as a recreational area during dry spells,” he said after inspecting the site with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.
He added that the project also includes an internal drainage system costing RM14.5 million, while the second phase tender closed on September 24 and is now being processed.
Dr Sim stressed that solving Desa Wira’s flooding requires a comprehensive plan, including upgraded drains, external waterways, and retention ponds, noting that the low-lying area is prone to flooding after heavy rain.
Two retention ponds have been approved: one near Batu Kawa New Township (RM19.88 million, 2024–2026) and another at Pine Square (RM22.5 million, completion in November 2026).
