New flights arrangement between East and West Malaysia, Lee Khim Shin
The flight schedules that had been agreed starting May 2 included Kuala Lumpur – Kuching: 4 times weekly, Kuala Lumpur – Bintulu: 1 time weekly, Kuala Lumpur – Miri: 2 times weekly and Kuala Lumpur – Sibu: 1 time weekly (only permitted to operate starting 16th May 2020), said Minister for Transport, Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
Lee said he has personally contacted Minister for Transport, Malaysia to convey the decision of the State Disaster Management Committee to limit the frequency of flights from Kuala Lumpur to Sarawak. The matter was deliberated in Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Peringkat Menteri Persekutuan Pelaksanaan Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan on 30th April 2020 which agreed to our request to limit the number of flights from Kuala Lumpur to Sarawak.
Lee added that the decision of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to reduce the number of inbound flights to Sarawak with hundreds of passengers per flight is to ascertain that there are enough rooms at designated quarantine centres in the State. This includes the availability of hotel rooms to cater for the incoming passengers at any time. This matter is coordinated by the Divisional Disaster Management Committee.
The decision of Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Peringkat Menteri Persekutuan Pelaksanaan Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan, said Lee, was conveyed by the Ministry of Transport, Malaysia to the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) and Chief Executive Officer of Suruhanjaya Penerbangan Malaysia on 30th April 2020 to take the necessary follow up actions with Airline Companies.
