SPCB chief Wilfred Yap helps the temple management

SUPP Public Complaints Bureau Chief, Wilfred Yap was recently approached for assistance by the caretaker (Mr Thong) of the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple situate at Jalan Ithmus, Kuching. The Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple was first built about ten years ago but the shrine of Tanjung Datuk Kong Deity has been on the site for a few hundred years.

The caretaker who is also the Chairman of the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple Management Committee had requested for help as he had received information that the electricity and water supply to the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple will be disconnected in the near future.

Immediately upon receiving the request for assistance, SUPP Public Complaints Bureau Chief, Wilfred Yap went to the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple to assess the situation. It was discovered that the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple currently obtained its electricity and water supply free of charge from Kuching Barrage Management Sdn Bhd.

However, an officer of Kuching Barrage Management had informed that the electricity and water supply to the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple will be disconnected in the near future. The officer from Kuching Barrage Management Sdn Bhd had requested the Temple Management Committee to look into obtaining the supply of electricity directly from SESCO and water supplies from the Kuching Water Board.

From enquiries made, it was discovered that the land on which the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple is situated have recently been alienated by the Sarawak Government to a company. As such SESCO and Kuching Water Board had requested Temple Management Committee to obtain the consent from the company before they could connect the electricity and water supply. However the land title have not been issued to the company.

SUPP Public Complaints Bureau Chief, Wilfred Yap together with the Chairman and Secretary of the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple Management committee had a meeting with representatives of company. During the meeting, the chairman/caretaker briefed the representatives of the company on the history of the Temple and requested the company to grant consent for the supply of electricity directly from SESCO and water supplies from the Kuching Water Board to Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple. The representatives from the company informed that they will convey the message to their Board of Management.

SUPP Public Complaints Bureau also humbly appealed to the company to grant consent for connection of the electricity and water supply to the Tanjung Datuk Kong Temple and for their understanding as a small matter of this nature can be emotionally blown out of proportion and become a political issue which is not good for all parties involved.
