Autonomy from Putrajaya for Education.
The SUPP Stampin Parliamentary Liaison Committee has backed Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s move to seek autonomy from Putrajaya for education.
Chairman Tan Joo Phoi said the liaison committee has also suggested the state government set up a public university with English as its medium of instruction once the devolution of power in education had materialised.
“At the moment, the only universities in Malaysia that use English as the medium of teaching are all private ones, while none of the public universities practise this,” he told a news conference recently.
The SUPP vice-president said if primary and secondary schools in Sarawak opted for English as the medium of instruction, the state government should also assist with the tertiary education of young Sarawakians.
Meanwhile, the liaison committee will hold a forum entitled ‘Defending Sarawak’s Constitutional Rights’ at Grand Continental Hotel on Nov 13, set to commence at 7.15pm.
SUPP veteran leader Datuk David Teng, a former assistant minister and former Repok assemblyman, is the speaker.
The forum will be conducted in English and admission is free.
Only 100 seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
