Two branches, Belaga and Kemena, not eligible for branch election
Two Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) branches (Belaga and Kemena) are not eligible to conduct their branch election this coming July 15, 2014 to August 3, 2014, said President of the party, Tan Sri Peter Chin, in a press conference after the CWC meeting today (14 Jun 2014).
Chin had earlier affirmed that three branches are not allowed to conduct their branches meeting – Belaga, Kemena and Sibu, but due to the large number of “Life” members in the Sibu branch, they are subsequently eligible.
The two branches were not eligible as they had not submitted their list of members before the closing date in April.
Each branch, according to the party constitution, has to submit the names and receipts of members who paid up their annual membership fees. But due to the large number of life members in Sibu branch (2417), they are able to make up the quorum of 90 members for a branch election and 42 members for sub-branch elections.
“There is a total of 316 members, one life member and non-paying members in Belaga. In the Kemena branch there are 396 members with no life and non-paying member. While in the Sibu branch there are 20,417 members with 2,417 life members in total,” he said.
Chin said all the branches had to adhere to the rules and regulations as stipulated in the party Constitution and all these branches have received a 24 paragraphs list of the ‘do’s” and ‘don’ts’.
Chin stressed that all branches were told to adhere to the rules and regulations so that there would not be any more complain this time.
During the last branch election, 15 branches were affected and disgruntled members complained to the Registrar of Society after which two branches, Bekenu and Piasau, were de-registered. The de-registration were lifted after ROS was satisfied with their appeal.
The President also noted that there is lack of details and records for members in the Sibu branch so there is a need for them to submit the necessary report and counterfoil.
