Kho Teck Wan says Sarawak government is taking the right step for being cautious to deal with Covid-19

As an experienced ruling government, Sarawak government viewed the opening up of business and public operation very serious and carefully. This is evidence with  Sarawak government’s stand when it didn’t agree or disagree with Federal’s CMCO, said SUPP Woman Chief, Kho Teck Wan.

Praising Sarawak government for iys stance, Kho said Sarawak disaster management committee is careful as they announced that they are still in the midst of studying the conditional movement order’s standard operating procedures provided by Federal government. Deputy chief minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah stressed that Sarawak will put public health as priority.

Sge added that SDMC had  explained that Sarawak has the power to regulate the movement of people to prevent the spread of disease. This power is provided by Section 15 of the Protection of Public Health Ordinance 1998, which was enacted pursuant to the state’s legislative powers under Item 7 of the Concurrent List in the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

Unlike some opposition politician who like to push the Sarawak government for an instant solution and quick exit plan, Sarawak government knows that people are our biggest factor in fighting Covid-19 outbreak. Any strategy that doesn’t suit Sarawak’s capacity and ability to control people’s activities will result in subsequent uncontrollable outbreak.

Sarawak government acknowledged the economy impact of delay in opening up of businesses but stressed that the health and safety of Sarawakian is government’s top priority. Therefore there is a need to implement the SOPs based on Sarawak’s capacity and circumstances.

The Sarawak disaster management committee released the ‘CMCO strategy in Sarawak’ today to ensure that the opening up of businesses and agencies will be done in stages with orderly fashion, and be executed effectively.

Sarawak government is the only government in Malaysia that presented its people with a ‘CMCO strategy’.

The strategy chart showed that the SOPs provided by Federal government will be refined to suit Sarawak’s condition. The various stakeholders in Sarawak will then be presented with the refined SOPs and guidelines. This is to ensure these various government agencies and businesses can prepare for the opening of business and operations according to the refined SOPs. The monitoring and enforcement of the SOPs will differ depends on the zones and disease outbreak conditions.

Although the details of sarawak specific SOPs is not out yet, but rest assure the interest of health of Sarawakian is government’s top priority.

Covid-19 is highly infectious, with high fatality rate, has no vaccine and no effective drug yet. I would like to stress that we are fighting this invisible war that requires collective effort of all Sarawakian. Any rush decision may result in casualty and more severe economy impact than MCO. So I stand with Sarawak government’s careful approach and hope the people will work with us.
