Piasau Camp Miri Nature Park Society – Media Release by Dato Sebastian Ting – Chairman PCMNPS

PIASAU NATURE RESERVE – The Environmental Heart of Miri City

There will be a handing over ceremony of the land popularly known as Shell Piasau Camp by Sarawak Shell Bhd (SSB) to Sarawak Forestry Commission (SFC) today (14th October)  at 10.30am at Piasau Boat Club.

Due to the requests and persistence of the people of Miri, this very important area is now gazetted and is known as the PIASAU NATURE RESERVE (PNR).

I received an invitation from SFC to attend this momentous event and would also like to invite you, the people of Miri, to attend this Community Engagement and Development event.

It has been a long but fruitful journey by Piasau Camp Nature Park Society (PCMNPS) with the support of the people of Miri to ensure that we have a nature reserve in our midst.

We have come so far because of the active participation of PCMNPS, Malaysia Nature Society Miri Branch, the Miri Community and the expatriates Community when we started the monthly Walk in The Park on 5th January 2013, 2 years and 9 months ago.

On behalf of the people of Miri, we also wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Shell and Petronas for their understanding, support and generosity to ensure that PNR came into existence.

We must also not forget the hornbills which focussed the hearts and minds of so many people on our nature and environment and also the unfortunate killing of Faridah.

It is also important to note that now we have it, we must ensure this environmental area is nurtured for the animal life there and also protected for our future generation.

We look forward to it being developed in such a manner where the flora and fauna, animal life and the people of Miri who wish to visit it can co-exist in balance.

We are indeed very thankful to the Sarawak Government and in particular Sarawak Forestry Corporation for the opportunity to attend this briefing with the view of engaging the Community on the development plans within Piasau Nature Reserve.

We look forward during this briefing to be updated on the actual boundaries of PNR. This is important because to be a viable nature reserve it must be ensured there is sufficient land and also that neighbouring activities do not impact severely on the smooth progress of PNR.

As this invitation is for Community Engagement and Development Update, we sincerely hope that you will come and join us this morning.

We hope you can share your thoughts on how PNR should be developed and your opinions are very important and will be very much appreciated.

In the best interest of our children, their children and future generations, I sincerely appeal and urge you all to attend this very important Community Engagement and Development Update.

Please remember that we the people are the stakeholders to ensure a better environmental future in our City.
