Tidal Gate and Road Bunds Problems at Jalan Lebaan, Along Sungai Lebaan, Bawang Assan
The issue of frequent flooding of 1.5 feet to 2 feet and year end flooding of 4 feet to 5 feet at Jalan Lebaan along Sungai Lebaan, Bawang Assan has bothered the local citizens for more than 30 years. Initially, there are more the 70 families staying in this area and now only around 30 families still stayed in their heritage houses here. More than 30 families have moved out of this area due to flooding problems remained unsettled, even they have made their requests for so many times to the relevant parties but however, there are no serious actions and attentions taken for even trying to solved the flooding problems.
Some actions taken makes the flooding problems even worse, such as installing a small tidal gate which is never functioning enough to flow the excess water to the river due to the gate is too small. Odd action like filling half tar sealed road to be earth bunds along the Jalan Lebaan. This action causes the 2 way tar sealed road to become 1 way tar sealed road which can only 1 car to pass through, which also make the local villagers very inconvenient.
The river branches and the drainages are always full with water and the sawmill factory along the Jalan Lebaan even block the drainage with timber waste which make the flooding problems more serious. All the areas along Jalan Lebaan are filled with waters in 1.5 feet to 2 feet frequently and at year end, 4 feet to 5 feet. Every flood occurs, it needs 10 days for the flood to disappear.
The flooding issues can been shown frequently on the local newspaper. All the villagers in this area are farmers. Their crops and plants died due to the flooding problems, their properties damaged also. But the relevant parties never really take any actions to help them.
Mr. Dr. Sim of SUPP Chairman, Mr. Robert Lau of SUPP Bawang Assan Chairman, together with Mr. Wong Toh Woo have visited the above mentioned flooding Area, i.e. Jalan Lebaan along Sungai Lebaan and meeting local villagers to know in more detail about the flooding problem, hoping to bring this issue directly to Our Chief Minister.
