Piasau State Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting addressed the issue of coastal erosion at Lutong Beach

Piasau State Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting announced that emergency funds had been secured to begin repair work as soon as possible, ensuring the safety of the Lutong beach erosion areas.

In a press conference with Mayor Adam Yii, Ting said strong winds and high waves in recent days have caused significant erosion along parts of the Lutong coastline, posing a threat to nearby roads and residents.

He revealed that he had reported the issue to the federal minister as early as January 16, urging for immediate action.

Ting stated that another report was submitted last night, prompting a quick response from the authorities and the government approved temporary repair work and instructed that it should commence without delay.

The coastal protection project was initially estimated to cost RM45 million, with planning completed on January 31. However, since the approval process could take several months, Ting requested an emergency grant of RM5 million to prioritize road reinforcement and safety measures.

To expedite the project, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee and the Miri Disaster Management Committee have stepped in including Miri mayor, city council, police, and other agencies are also coordinating efforts to ensure smooth implementation.

The Miri police, added Ting have been instructed to place warning signs at hazardous road sections, urging the public to stay away from high-risk areas. He assured that he would continue monitoring the situation to safeguard residents.

Beyond the temporary repairs, Ting emphasized the need for long-term solutions, such as strengthening seawalls and implementing comprehensive coastal protection measures to prevent future disasters.

The government is seeking additional funding to enhance the area’s defense against erosion, ensuring the long-term safety of coastal roads and residential zones.

Ting advised the residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by the authorities. He reaffirmed his commitment to overseeing the progress of the restoration work and ensuring its timely completion.
