MPP Chairman, Tan Kai urges dog owners to bring their dogs to be given annual anti-vaccine jabs
Padawan Municipal area recorded a total of 2,042 dogs that were given free anti-rabies vaccination by the Department of Veterinary Service Sarawak office last year.
Padawan Municipal council (MPP)Chairman, Tan Kai said with rabies still rampant in Sarawak, pet owners should send their pets especially dogs for anti-rabies jab,
Tan kai pointed out that the public should not complain of expensive anti-rabies jabs as it is free at the department of Veterinary Service office at Mile 12, Jalan Kuching/Serian.
Asking pet owners to be responsible for their pets, he said to get a pet, they need to keep it until old age and not to abandon it when it is sick or too old to take care of the house. “By abandoning your pets, you are encouraging the continuation of rabies and when the authorities have no choice but to cull rabies dogs, there is always a big ‘huha’ over it,” he added.
Tan Kai said MPP does have a dog unit that culls sick dogs and the service is available when members of the public were bitten or scared and called in for help. He said they cannot ignore such calls as the residents fear their families being bitten by aggressive or rabies dogs.
To get their pets vaccinated, Tan Kai said they must ensure that your pet dog is above 3 months old and healthy, prepare the owner’s IC & pet’s vaccination card and after the dog has been vaccinated, they must Quarantine and isolate your pet dog for 28 days to allow immunity against rabies to strengthen.
Additional things to do is to ensure they do not shower the dog for at least 1 week after vaccination, do not let your dog mix with other animals with unknown vaccination status during quarantine and do not let your dog roam freely in public places. If they need to walk a dog, they must use a leash when going out.
He warned that all pet dog owners in Sarawak must get their dogs vaccinated against rabies every year in accordance with the Anti-Rabies Vaccination Order. Failure to do so is an offence under Section 40, Veterinary Public Health Ordinance, 1999 with a fine not exceeding RM2,500. Dogs found without evidence of vaccination may be detained.
