Train railway build along the border a good idea, says Datuk Sebastian Ting

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah suggested that a train railway should be built on the border between Sarawak and Indonesia to match Indonesia’s plan to move its capital to Kalimantan. The railway can be used to transport goods, and the federal government can assist Sarawak in this regard, negotiating with the Indonesian government to implement the railway plan.

SUPP Sec General, Datuk Sebastian Ting said he welcomed Fadilla’s suggestion as he has mentioned many times before that the Federal government must pay attention to the trend of relocating the capital of Indonesia to Kalimantan, and pay more attention to the development of East Malaysia in the future. Whether it is the infrastructure or security issues in the border area, the federal government is fully responsible, must assist Sarawak and Sabah to make necessary improvements.

“The railway proposal put forward by DPM is very timely. Strengthening the traffic connection with the Indonesian capital Nusantara can greatly promote the economic growth of East Malaysia and benefit the people of Sarawak and Sarawak. In particular, the infrastructure facilities in the inland areas can be significantly improved to improve the quality of life of the people in the rural areas. This is also in line with the concept of the federal government and the Sarawak government to help the people in the rural areas get rid of poverty, “he added.

Ting believe that the Indonesian government is also happy to see the success of this railway connection project. On the whole, he said Borneo Island is a thriving and developing area. Its excellent geographical location and the advantage of being away from natural disasters are a major selling point for attracting foreign investment.

“What’s more, under the leadership of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari, Sarawak has continuously explored the development of new energy fields. From the initial hydropower to hydrogen energy and solar energy, Sarawak’s renewable energy can be called the “power plant of Borneo Island” can support industrial and economic growth. Therefore, the railway network on Borneo Island is expected to become the key to future economic growth. With the improvement of transportation connections, residents on Borneo Island can communicate with each other more conveniently, and freight and trade will also flourish, ” he added.

As a Miri native, Ting looked forward to the implementation of this railway project even more. After all, geographically, Nusantara, Indonesia is close to Northern Sarawak, which means that the people of Northern Sarawak can benefit more directly from the Indonesian capital relocation plan. Of course, the premise is that there must be a comprehensive preparation and development plan in order to get a share of it.

He stated that Abang Johari recently announced the approval of 238 million ringgits for the dredging of the Kuala Baram Channel, the deepening of the river bed and the construction of river embankments, which will bring greater development opportunities to Miri Port. Once all the project plans are implemented, as the port closest to Nusan Tara, Miri Port will inevitably become an important base for future economic activities and play an important role in the import and export trade of the region.

For the development of Northern Sarawak, especially Miri, Ting hoped that this will definitely bring huge economic benefits. This will be another milestone that is conducive to Miri’s economic growth after the relocation of Shell Malaysia’s headquarters to Miri.

In view of this, he urged the Federal government to pay close attention to this series of development trends, and promote the negotiation of railway plans with the Indonesian government as soon as possible, so that various development plans and visions can come to fruition. This, he said, is also the expectation of the people of Northern Sarawak, especially the people of Miri. With comprehensive planning and preparation, the future will definitely be full of vigor and vitality.
