Dr Sim says we should concentrate on more relevant issues

It is disappointing that an alcohol name ‘Timah’ has been dragged to become controversial, said Local government and Housing Minister, Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“Are Malaysians being duped into thinking we have been drinking report cards (the soft drink 100 plus)? devouring our mommies, (the popular noodles Mamee) or investing in gold bar with every plane ticket? (MAS), he asked.

Dr Sim said Malaya politicians have to stop using silly, toxic word-play to justify their rhetorics, or it will never end.

The Tangga Batu MP had questioned Timah’s name and the particular image of “Captain Speedy” — otherwise known as Tristam Charles Sawyer Speedy — that is printed on the brand’s bottle, during Dewan Rakyat sitting last week.

She claimed that the brand’s name could be confused with short forms of the Malay feminine names, such as Fatimah, and pointed out that the image of Captain Speedy seems to be wearing a kopiah that is often donned by Muslims. She has since apologized but damage has been done.

Dr Sim said it is no wonder that the Prime Minister preferred to launch Keluarga Malaysia concept here in Sarawak rather than over there in Kuala Lumpur .

He urged all Sarawakians to focus our energy on uniting and not dividing as we are living in a multi-religious society.

“So far, we in Sarawak can lead the way forward, as a role model to show them what real unity is. However, we need to continue this trend of unity for our future generations and not to lose it along the way. This is something we should cultivate,” he said.
