Sarawak flag to fly high on Mt Murut
Sarawak Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Sebastian Ting presented a Sarawak flag to the daughter of a mountain climber, Encik Sakia yesterday afternoon at SUPP Piasau branch to be placed on top of Mt. Murut.
Ting who is State Assemblyman for Piasau said Mt. Murut at Ba’kelalan standing at 2,422 meters high (7,950 ft.) is the highest mountain in Sarawak.
He said a friend of his who went up saod thry saw a flag from another state on the summit.
It did not seems right so we need to put our own flag up there, he added. Sakai will volunteer to climb up the mountain which took two days.
Ting added to go up, it took 4 to 5 hours at the base camp. And the next day, it will take another 4 to 5 hours to go up to the summit.
Record showed that Dr. Eric Mjoberg, a Swedish geologist who worked as a curator in Sarawak Museum was the first person to climb up the mountain.
