CM: will announce candidate for Pujut in due time
Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said he has received the list of potential candidates from both SUPP and UPP to contest in the Pujut by-election on July 4 and he would announce the name in due time. He said despite the odds, he is confident of BN winning back the seat.
On May 19, the Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah announced that polling for the Pujut by-election would be July 4, with nomination on June 20. The by-election follows the disqualification of Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon from the DAP by the State Legislative Assembly on May 12.
Dr Ting, who won the seat with a majority of 1,759 votes during the May 2016 state election. He was challenged by Datuk Hii King Chion (direct BN candidate), Jofri Jaraiee (PAS) and Fong Pau Teck (Independent).
SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian was also present with Abang Johari during the launch of a Ramadan bazaar here yesterday. He, however, was silent on the subject (by-election).
He did however tell reporters at the State Legislative Assembly on May 19 that SUPP would contest the by-election ‘as Pujut is the party’s traditional seat prior to the 11th state election last year’.
