Sarawak government’s initiative to prioritise English backed by Education Ministry
The Federal Education Minister had given the green light for Sarawak government’s initiative to prioritize English in the state. Deputy Minister of Education Senator Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the ministry is open for more discussions with the state government on the usage of English and to improve the proficiency of English among students.
Stressing the good command of English as critical and vital for competitiveness in the job and global market, he said they may look into using the Common European English Framework to standardise English in Malaysian schools.
He added that there is a need to make English language strong as there has been a decline in the standard of English among the young.
Chong, who was on a one-day visit to Sarawak, said to survive in the modern world, the younger generation need to master English, which is an international language and a language of commerce and science. It is not about being not loyal to Malaysia, he added.
