SUPP President, Tan Sri Peter Chin thanked the Chief Minister
Press Statement by TAN SRI PETER CHIN FAH KUI, PRESIDENT OF SUPP issued at Miri on 5th Febuary, 2014
I sincerely thank YAB Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the Chairman of State Barisan Nasional cum President of PBB cum Chief Minister of Sarawak for his appeal to the two fractions within SUPP to quickly sort out their differences and unite as one again as was reported in the major newspapers in Sarawak. It is a positive statement coming from the Chairman of the State Barisan Nasional as well as a timely reminder that every BN Party needs time to prepare for the up-coming State elections.
I thoroughly understand the significance of SUPP being able to resolve its leadership dispute as soon as possible. A proper and long lasting resolution to this issue will ensure stability within both SUPP and BN Sarawak. When there is will from both sides to ensure a fair and long lasting resolution, there will always a way to do so. Despite what some of my detractors try to potray me as someone crazy for power, I want to state categorically that ever since the last Triennial Delegates Conference in December, 2011, it has been my intention to ensure a smooth succession of the so-called “old guards” (including myself) to the younger generation of leaders.
I also understand it is important that there must be elected and installed a younger leadership within the Party when the Party’s Triennial Delagates Conference comes around later this year. To me this is an important aspect of the renewal process for SUPP. But it is not a matter of what I think on the matter because young and capable leaders of SUPP must first of all be elected at the Sub-Branch and Branch levels. These leaders should normally be elected as delegates to the Triennial Delegates Conference. Only through this process will these young generation of SUPP leaders emerge to take over the reins of the Party. This is the process that I often spoke about when I visited the branches throughout the State.
I fully concur with the advise from our Chief Minister that the Chinese community of Sarawak must be represented in the State Cabinet and therefore able to provide MEANINGFUL participation as a partner in the State and Federal levels of Government. As such our representatives whenever they are appointed to serve must truly represent SUPP’s interests as a political party to serve the peoples of our beloved country. Therefore, I do not have any problem with elected representatives from SUPP, whether as ADUNS or Members of Parliament, being appointed into positions of authority in the State or Federal Cabinet as long as he or she looks into the Party’s interest on major policies and with regards to important implementation matters. On such matters, this is also a requirement that other BN parties expect of their representatives in positions of anthority within the Government.
