Swift public support funds cochlear implants for two miri children
An outpouring of public generosity over just 19 days has successfully raised more than RM200000, allowing two hearing impaired children to receive cochlear implant surgery here.
The children, Andy Harrison, aged three, and four year old Flora Lee Kai Shuan, are scheduled to undergo the procedures at Miri Hospital by the end of April.
Piasau State Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the fundraising effort drew encouraging support from both residents in Miri and contributors from outside the city.
He revealed that a total of RM232079.51 has been collected so far, which includes RM100000 from an anonymous donor as well as RM50000 contributed by the Miri Cochlear Implant Association.
“With more than RM132000 channelled directly into the accounts, we now have sufficient funds to move forward with the surgeries for both children,” he said during a press conference held at his office today.
He added that the association will oversee the funds to ensure they are used for the surgeries and follow up care, including rehabilitation and hearing training programmes after the operations.
