Statement from Dato Sebastian, Secretary General SUPP

“July 22 – A Momentous Occasion for Sarawakians”

It is with great joy and enthusiasm that we in Sarawak United Peoples’ Party wish the people of Sarawak a Happy Independence Day.

22nd July 1963 is a very significant milestone in our illustrious history. We gained independence from British colonial rule on this day.  Just as 31st August is a proud day for Malayans, for Sarawakians 22nd July is of equal significance. Correct historical facts are very important to us in Sarawak.

We are also happy to note that all the celebrations across Sarawak to mark our independence have been carried out peacefully and in a carnival like atmosphere.

We also thank and are grateful to the authorities who had a change of heart and have now allowed Sarawakians to celebrate this important day in Kuching, and in Sibu and Miri on 19th July 2015. Both events took place peacefully and with the greatest pride.

All of us in Sarawak should be proud of this day and indeed we should highlight it even more.

In fact the Sarawak State Government in 2013 for the first time celebrated July 22 in a very momentous occasion. It organised a re-enactment of the lowering of the Union Jack at Pangkalan Batu in Kuching and the departure of the last British Governor of Sarawak.

SUPP in conjunction with Sarawak Independence Day celebration last month launched the “SUPP for Sarawakians” banner and car  stickers. We have launched   our Yellow T-Shirts “I am Sarawakian” “Remembering 22nd July 1963”..

Our commitment and dedication to Sarawakians and Sarawak is unshakeable and total. This is enshrined in our party’s name – Sarawak United Peoples’ Party.
