Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian witnesses DID handing flood mitigate to contractors

Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said flood mitigation is a very complex with multiple factors such as undersized drains due to excessive development Sarawak Urban Stormwater, undersize river with increase in sea water level, climate change with excessive amount of rains.

He said multiple new strategies must be applied to intervene at multiple levels (local, regional, global) to solve this issue as there is no single solutions or quick fix of flood mitigation.

Dr Sim said this during the handover of the letters of award by Director of DID Sarawak, Datu Ir Ahmad for two successful contractors through open tender for infrastructure Improvement works in Batu Kawah which is to improve drainage System at Jalan Ketitir, Batu Kawah, Kuching. Jalan Ketitir Kuching.

He said at Jalan Ketitir the monsoon drains costing RM22.50 million by the successful contractor.

The other area is the infrastructure improvement Works in Batu Kawah for improvement of drainage system at RPR Batu Kawah, Kuching Phase 1 at RM19.88 million by the successful contractor.

” It is exciting project as these are the first of its kind in Kuching, “Dry Pond” of nearly 10 acres over the play grounds of the public spaces in the middle of MJC/Pine square. The “Dry Pond” serve as retention pond during excessive rain falls and not able to discharge to the river when the water level very high. We learned this during the study tour to Europe last year, is called “Making room for water”, he said.

He said if the two projects are completed by February 2025 as stated in the contracts, it will solve a lot of flooding in Batu Kawa.
