PRESS STATEMENT from Minister for Local Government & Housing Sarawak
Sarawak Cabinet has today agreed to implement smoking ban at all eateries in the State effective 1st March, 2019. The decision to ban smoking at eating places is for the health of the general public. However, with the approval of the local authorities, licenced operators may designate smoking spot at an area not less than 3 metres away from the nearest table where food being served and it shall be the responsibility of the licensee to ensure that such a place is kept clean at all times. The Sarawak Cabinet has also agreed that the first 6 months from 1st March will be educational enforcement period. No compound will be issued during this period.
Earlier this month on 1st January, the Federal Government has banned smoking at all restaurants and food joints in Peninsular Malaysia. Sabah will implement their smoking ban on 1st February 2019.
