SUPP SECRETARY GENERAL’S PRESS STATEMENT ON THE STATUS OF REGISTRATION OF SUPP AS WELL AS THE STATUS OF THE REGISTRATION OF THE SUPP PIASAU BRANCH AND THE SUPP BEKENU BRANCH AS OF 9th JANUARY, 2014.
1) AS REGARDS SUPP PARTY CENTRAL
The Registrar of Societies Sarawak, the Director Mr. Ken Leben, had handed over to me an ORIGINAL copy of a letter issued by the Deputy Registrar of Societies, Kuala Lumpur under the caption “Parti Rakyat Bersatu Sarawak (The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party” dated 6th January, 2014. The said letter was copied to the Party President and the Treasurer-General. In essence this letter is a Show Cause issued under Section 13(2) of the Society Act 1966, which requires the Party to submit to the Registrar of Societies in Kuala Lumpur reason or reasons why the registration of SUPP should not be cancelled. As the Secretary General of the Party, I acknowledged receipt of the said letter from Mr. Ken Leben who represented the Registrar of Societies, Kuala Lumpur in handing over the letter to me this morning.
Here I wish to assure all Party members everywhere that, after having discussed the matter with Party President and other senior leaders, the Party will carry out whatever necessary to comply with the requirements of the letter and the Society Act. The present leadership of the Party will do all that is required to preserve the legal status of the Party and I am sure ALL Party members will also want such actions to be taken by the Party leadership. Therefore, on behalf of the Central Committee and the Central Working Committee, I want to appeal for calm, tolerance, patience and understanding from ALL members during this difficult period of our Party’s colourful history. We have faced adversity before and we have overcome them. I am confident that we can face this one with courage and determination to overcome the same.
2) AS REGARDS THE SUPP MIRI (PIASAU) BRANCH AND THE SUPP BEKENU BRANCH
The Registrar of Societies Sarawak, the Director Mr. Ken Leben had at the same time handed to me two (copies/original) copies of letters addressed to the Secretary of the SUPP Miri (Piasau) Branch and SUPP Bekenu Branch with copies to the Chairman and Treasurer of those Branches concerned. These identical letters were issued by the Deputy Registrar of Societies, Kuala Lumpur under the caption “Parti Rakyat Bersatu Sarawak (The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party) (SUPP) Cawangan Piasau” and “Parti Rakyat Bersatu Sarawak (The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party) (SUPP) Cawangan Bekenu” and dated 6th January, 2014. In essence these letters were to convey to the SUPP Miri (Piasau) Branch and the SUPP Bekenu Branch the decisions of the Registrar of Societies, Kuala Lumpur that the replies to the Show Cause letters issued on 6th Jun 2013 to these two SUPP Branches could not be accepted and therefore the Registrar of Societies had decided to cancel the registration of the SUPP Miri (Piasau) Branch and the SUPP Bekenu Branch with effect from the date that the said letters were issued.
As Secretary General of the Party and on behalf of the Party Central leadership, I like to assure ALL SUPP members attached to the former SUPP Miri (Piasau) Branch and the former SUPP Bekenu Branch to remain calm and to exercise tolerance, patience and understanding during this difficult period. All efforts are being made by the former Chairmen and their teams of the affected Branches concerned to ensure that ALL necessary actions and procedures are duly complied in submitting the appeals as required under the Societies Act and the said letters from the Registrar of Societies, Kuala Lumpur.
Also I take this opportunity to inform ALL SUPP members of the former SUPP Miri (Piasau) Branch and the former SUPP Bekenu Branch that their membership are still valid and attached directly with SUPP Party Central. From now onwards, all activities related to members of these former SUPP branches will be directly dealt with by Party Central.
Dr. Sim Kui Hian,
Secretary General SUPP
