Hakka Lions Donated by Wilfred Yap to Strengthen Cultural Heritage

Kota Sentosa State assemblyman Wilfred Yap has donated two Hakka lions to the Malaysia Hakka Culture Association Sarawak Branch in a move to preserve and promote the community’s cultural heritage.

The lions were officially unveiled through an eye-dotting ceremony held at the Sam San Kuet Bong Temple in Kota Sentosa, an event that symbolizes awakening the spirit of the lions to bring blessings and protection.

Yap said the donation reflects his commitment to supporting the Hakka community while also promoting unity and diversity in Sarawak.

“The Hakka community has a proud history of resilience, unity, and cultural richness. By supporting traditions such as the lion dance, we ensure that our younger generations remain connected to their roots while also strengthening the spirit of harmony and cultural diversity in Sarawak,” he said.

Yap also linked the initiative to the Sarawak Government’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), stressing that inclusivity is as important as economic growth.

“PCDS 2030 is not only about economic transformation, but also about building a socially inclusive society. Preserving cultural heritage and encouraging mutual respect among different communities contribute to unity, which is fundamental to Sarawak’s progress,” he added.

The ceremony drew members of the Malaysia Hakka Culture Association Sarawak Branch, temple committee members, community leaders, and local residents. It concluded with a lion dance performance to bless the temple grounds and the community of Kota Sentosa.
