Opposition Criticism on Rural Development Disregards GPS’ Proven Track Record, Says Wilfred Yap
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has hit back at the opposition for repeatedly questioning Sarawak’s rural development agenda, describing their criticisms as misleading, irresponsible, and insulting to the people who are already benefiting from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)-led projects.
He said the Sarawak Government has consistently allocated between 60 and 67 percent of its development expenditure to rural development over the past decade, one of the highest proportions in Malaysia. This, he stressed, reflects GPS’ strong commitment to uplifting rural communities and narrowing the urban-rural gap.
“The development agenda under GPS is holistic and inclusive. While rural development has rightly been prioritised to uplift long-neglected areas, critical infrastructure in urban centres has also not been sidelined,” Yap said.
Citing examples in Kuching and Kota Sentosa, he highlighted recent Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) allocations which funded drainage upgrades in Taman Hui Sing, improvements to school facilities, road repairs in Batu 7, and support for community and cultural centres. These, he said, are tangible improvements that directly benefit local residents.
He added that GPS’ rural development initiatives go beyond rhetoric and are visible on the ground through upgraded rural roads, improved water and electricity coverage, wider internet access, and enhanced community facilities such as schools, clinics, cultural halls, and places of worship.
“In suburban parts of Kota Sentosa and surrounding areas, RTP funding has translated into better drainage, school facilities, road repairs, water and electricity extensions, and cultural facilities that bring communities together,” he said.
He added that the people can see for themselves they have better roads, reliable utilities, and improved facilities in both rural and urban areas.
“The GPS Government is committed to bridging the urban-rural gap through balanced, inclusive development and urged all loyal Anak Sarawak to remain united and not be misled by irresponsible rhetoric.
