Kota Sentosa Assemblyman YB Wilfred Yap Expresses Concern Over Irresponsible Parking Damaging Newly Upgraded Drains
Kota Sentosa Assemblyman Wilfred Yap has voiced his frustration over the irresponsible actions of certain drivers who park their vehicles on covered drains, causing damage to public infrastructure. This comes after the recent completion of a RM1.1 million RTP drainage upgrade project at the 7th Mile Old Bazaar, aimed at resolving persistent flash flooding issues in the area.
Despite the successful implementation of the RTP project, Yap has received complaints that the rainwater discharge outlet connected to the newly upgraded drain has been damaged due to unscrupulous parking by motorists. The added weight and pressure from parked vehicles have compromised the structural integrity of the drainage system, undoing the benefits of the recent upgrades.
It is extremely disappointing to see public property being damaged due to sheer negligence and a lack of civic responsibility. The Sarawak GPS government has allocated substantial funds to improve infrastructure for the benefit of the community, only for such efforts to be undermined by the irresponsible actions of a few.
Yap has formally requested the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to carry out immediate repairs to the damaged drainage outlet. At the same time, he has called on the relevant authorities to take strict action against motorists who disregard regulations and park indiscriminately on covered drains.
He also urged the public to play an active role in safeguarding public infrastructure. He encouraged residents to report instances of irresponsible parking by taking photos of vehicles obstructing or damaging drains and submitting them to the authorities for enforcement action.
Public property belongs to everyone, state Yap and we must treat it with care. Damages caused by such irresponsible acts ultimately burden taxpayers, who foot the bill for repairs. YB Wilfred Yap appeal to all road users to be more civic-minded and refrain from actions that harm community infrastructure.
Yap reiterated his commitment to ensuring that public funds are used effectively and that infrastructure projects deliver long-term benefits to the community. He warned that continued vandalism or misuse of public property would not be tolerated and called for stricter enforcement to deter such behaviour.
