Respond to DAP allegation’s allegation

SUPP Kuching Branch Assistant Publicity and Information Secretary Jong Zhen Xiang has responded to remarks made by DAPSY Sarawak Secretary George Lam Li Kang regarding the Sarawak government’s decision to purchase ATR 72-600 aircraft, calling Lam’s statements misleading and unfounded.

Jong stated that acquiring new aircraft is a long-term investment that will reduce operational costs and provide greater autonomy for Sarawak’s air connectivity. He argued that leasing, while seemingly cost-effective in the short term, would lead to higher expenses over time, making direct ownership the more financially sound choice.

Addressing claims that the decision was rushed, Jong asserted that the government had conducted thorough financial planning before launching AirBorneo. He highlighted Sarawak’s strong financial position and the strategic measures in place to ensure the sustainability of the airline.

Jong also dismissed accusations that AirBorneo is a political project, stating that its primary goal is to improve air travel for Sarawakians by offering more affordable and reliable flights. He pointed out that for years, high ticket prices and inconsistent flight schedules have hindered economic and tourism growth in the state.

Criticizing the opposition for offering no viable alternatives, Jong challenged Lam to provide evidence supporting the claim that leasing is a better option or to propose a concrete plan for improving Sarawak’s air connectivity. He accused the opposition of engaging in criticism without solutions, saying that such an approach does little to benefit the people.

Jong reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to transparency, assuring that details on AirBorneo’s funding and operational plans would be disclosed appropriately. He dismissed concerns over funding as baseless, adding that Sarawak’s financial standing is stronger than when the opposition held power at the federal level.

“The establishment of AirBorneo is for the benefit of Sarawakians, not a political maneuver. We welcome constructive discussions, but misleading statements must be addressed. If the opposition truly cares about Sarawak’s development, they should focus on offering real solutions rather than engaging in empty criticisms,” Jong said.
