Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian warns of surge in covid cases in Sarawak
Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian warned that there is a surge in covid sweeping through Sarawak and Malaysia at this very moment.
He said Sarawak Health Department noted an increasing trend in the number of COVID19 cases admitted to hospital since early November 2023.
Epid Week 49, out of 39 admissions, 25 patients (64.1%) admitted to hospital with category 3, 4 and 5 as compared to previous weeks of 6 cases over 13 admissions (46.2%).
Dr Sim said though Sarawak is into endemic rather than pandemic phase, living with the virus as a norm and symptoms tend to be mild because of vaccinations but the infectivity remain high.
“Despite 4 doses of COVID 19 vaccinations, with the current surge, some of our loved ones are still at risk of COVID19. The good news is we can minimize the risk by going back to what we have been doing during the height of COVID19 pandemic. It is for each one of us play our roles and do our parts again. We, Sarawakians had did it in 2020-2022 (hence we had the lowest number of cases and deaths in Malaysia) and we shall do it again, ” he said.
He encouraged the people to wear facemask again in crowded public area and observed personal hygiene at all times such as hand washing and ensure vulnerable (elderly, NCD patients – diabetes, high BP, Obesity; respiratory – asthma; immunocompromised – cancer patients… ) have their second booster shots.
Those who are tested positive, he said they should do test, report, Isolate, Inform, and Seek medical health if symptomatic.
Taking free oral paxlovid (oral anti viral “COVID” as early as possible for it to be most effective to prevent severe symptoms.
Dr Sim said he was told that currently, they had more than three months of the stock pile for Personal Protective Equipment(PPE).
