Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew Secretary General of SUPP new year message

On behalf of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), I would like to wish all fellow Sarawakians a very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2020!   In less than a month, we will soon be welcoming the lunar new year of the Rat.

In general, Rat symbolizes strong vitality, a trait that Sarawak must have to endure the growing trade uncertainty in the global economy and the sluggish national economy from the Federal policies.

Nevertheless, we firmly believe that the year 2020 is going to be a good year for Sarawak. The Sarawak government has implemented several key initiatives to sustain Sarawak’s rapid growth and development in improving the living standard of the Sarawak people especially the rural.

We hope and pray in 2020, we will continue to have unity, peace and harmony in Sarawak so we can continue to stay focus in more important task ahead in developing Sarawak to be a developed State by 2030.

We certainly do not want to be like in Peninsular crippled by apparent racism, fear and mistrust between the government and their people.

In this regard. Sarawak Government must continue to have full control of our Immigration Autonomy and  whenever is necessary,  religious bigots and extremists must be banned and stopped from entering Sarawak.  They are not welcomed in Sarawak.

Petros and with the implementation of 5% State Sales Tax on exported I petroleum products will of course increase the much needed revenues for Sarawak to implement the  many approved projects with the objective to bring Sarawak into the next level of rapid development.

With the implementation of the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 (OMO 1958 as amended) and the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016, Sarawak is poised to be more involved next year in the upstream activities of our oil and gas industry. In the next few years, Petros will be taking over the power from Petronas as the Regulator to manage our oil and gas resources.

Even if Sarawak is rich of natural resources, we cannot depend on them forever as they will slowly and surely be depleted. We must look into a more sustainable economy and that is why next year 2020, Sarawak government remains focus in investing heavily in digital economy and providing the necessary infrastructure for it.

This will create new and more job opportunities for our young graduates into the field such as automation, artificial intelligent, information technology and bio-engineering.

At this juncture, we would like to appeal to all Sarawakians, irrespective of our political divide, to be invited with and be with our Sarawak Government in the present court cases against Petronas in defending our Sarawak ‘s rights to levy or impose 5% sales tax on exported petroleum products. Other oil companies operating in Sarawak had paid their 5% sales tax.  Only Petronas has hitherto refused to make such payment.

Overall, we believe  2020 will be a year full of hope as  Sarawak Government is fully committed to strive and  develop Sarawak and to  improve the living standard all Sarawakians..

The welfare of the people still remains a priority for the Sarawak government therefore next year we will have several new programs to help the people. Programs such as subsiding first RM 5 water bill, RM 1,000 for newborns, RM 450 for new mothers during confinement months  and the implementation of Kenyalang Gold Card to provide privileges and benefits for senior citizen.of age 60 and above.

Lastly, we take this opportunity to wish you all A Very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2020.
