Dr Sim to MBKS: Go beyong basic facilities
The job of the City councils should go beyond roads, drains and streetlight issues as these are the basic facilities provided by them, said Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Local Government yesterday.
Speaking to the staff of the Kuching City South (MBKS) who were celebrating their Gawai do at the council building, Dr. Sim in his speech said if the council was still thinking in term of the basic facilities, it is time for them to look into the ‘Blue Ocean’ concept which is to dare to be different and do better than the others.
Earlier on, in his speech, Mayor Datuk James Chan said the council had done a lot for the roads last year including some drains.
Dr. Sim said the council would not do justice to themselves if they were to think of basic facilities. He said the people’s expectation is high and he wanted the council to be far better than what was expected of them. “Be innovative, change your mindset and head towards new direction. You are the front-liner thus you have to know your task well,” he pointed out.
Asking the councilors to go to the ground to learn every nook and corner of their areas, Dr. Sim said they should know the people’s complaints and needs, otherwise they will be irreverent if he were to know more than them.
“I want Kuching residents to be proud of their city and said that this is my city. Thus, it is time for all councils to think outside the box and do well,” he said.
Urging the council to go ahead and plan and not to worry about financial aspect, he said he would give them the means but they must do the job without wasteage and that once the funds were provided, he wanted to see a good job done.
As the Chief mInister wants to see their KPI in six months, he said he too want to see the councils’ KPI in six months.
Dr. Sim also wished all those celebrating Gawai a happy Gawai celebration and added that Sarawakians should be thankful for the harmony and respect of each races and religions.
