Dato’ Sebastian on the Low Yat case
Kuching: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Secretary general, Dato’ Sebastian Ting said there should be no place for racist and extremists in Sarawak.
He said the recent events at Low Yat Plaza in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur , which ignited a riot on Saturday 11th July, revealed the ugly side of racism and extremism behaviour in Peninsular Malaya.
We in Sarawak cannot imagine how a clear cut case of theft can lead to several days of riot and tension in our nation’s capital.
“Sarawak United Peoples’ Party very strongly and unequivocally condemns such racist and extremist behaviour which lead to such hatred and mindless violence seen at Low Yat Plaza. There is genuine fear amongst the people in and around Low Yat Plaza..People and business suffer”, he pointed out.
He called to police to investigate this incident from all angles and make sure that those responsible face the full force of the law to prevent another ugly incidents.
“Back home, we cannot allow or import this type negative culture into Sarawak. All necessary steps must be taken by our state government to prevent racists and extremists from entering our state. They preach and advocate nothing but hatred and ill feelings. We are indeed proud to reiterate that our Chief Minister Adenan Satem would never allow this type of situation to arise here. He has loudly said this on many occasions.. SUPP and the people of Sarawak are solidly with him.
It is therefore important that we in Sarawak must continue to practise not only total acceptance , but more importantly, mutual understanding and genuine respect amongst all the races and religions. We never have this problem and must safeguard our Peace and Harmony,” he added.
Ting said SUPP as a multiracial party, has always advocated moderation, mutual understanding, genuine respect, total acceptance of each other, Peace and Harmony in our society and State.
The lack of such understanding and respect amongst each other can lead to the type of unwanted extremist behaviour seen at Low Yat Plaza.
In addition, we encourage responsible and truthful reporting on the internet and social media platforms. Wrong reporting of facts can unnecessarily fuel even more violence and hatred.
The people of Sarawak are different and we praise and applaud them for their understanding and harmonious outlook which has ensured peace and stability here.
Our Chief Minister, Adenan Satem’s continued leadership will help to maintain peace, moderation, respect and understanding between all races and religions.
