70 SUPP veterans in show of support for party chief Peter Chin

KUCHING: Seventy SUPP veterans gathered at a restaurant here yesterday to rally behind embattled party president Tan Sri Peter Chin.

Several of those present have been with the party since its formation in 1959, while many others had served as central working committee (CWC) and central committee (CC) members.

Former organising secretary Chung Kok Chiong took the lead to address his comrades by expressing hope that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) would not deregister the party.

Chung, who held the post from 1964 to 1974, believed the fate of SUPP should not be left merely in the hands of the ROS or even the prime minister given the party’s history and contributions.

“Now that the party has been given 30 days to explain to the ROS, we must prove that we are still able to bring the different forces together for the party.

“In my opinion, if a member is not happy with another member, he should talk things out as the headquarters’ door is always open,” he said.

Despite the show-cause letter, he remained optimistic the ROS would not simply jump to conclusion and write SUPP off.
He also queried why the authority issued the letter to shut down Bekenu and Piasau branches only a couple of months after both branch chairmen submitted their explanations.

“To my knowledge, both chairmen explained to the ROS several months ago. What kept ROS so long to issue the letters? Why waited until only a couple of days ago or about the same time the party central leadership decided to sack a leader?”
