Education grant for Mission schools

The Education department will give a grant of RM50 million to mission schools in Sarawak, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Secretary general, Dato’ Sebastian Ting in a press conference on 18 March.

Ting added that SJK will also get RM50 million and SMJK will get RM25 million for this year.

Chairing a meeting with the respective component parties in Sarawak, SPDP, PRS and PBB, Ting said Gerakan had send a representative, Ivanpal Singh Grewal, who is the political secretary to Dato’ Mah Siew Kiong, to get a clearer picture of what these schools need.

He said they had a fruitful discussion with the four component State parties on the needs of these schools.

Ting said they will work closely with the churches and the Federation of the Mission School Council Malaysia to determine how the fund would be spend to improve the schools.

Ivanpal said Sarawak has a total of 126 mission schools while Sabah has 99. In the whole of West Malaysia, there were 206 schools.

He said since 2009 to 2014, a total of RM420 million had been injected to help these schools.

Ting also hoped that there would be more allocation for mission schools next year.
