Sebastian: Helping the landless

Secretary General of Sarawak United Peoples’ party (SUPP), Dato’ Sebastian Ting thanked PRS President, Tan Sri Dr. James Masing, for his suggestion to the government to give agriculture land to Chinese farmers who were genuine in wanting to farm.

Ting, the Chairman for the Land and Housing committee in SUPP, said many Chinese had difficulty getting a proper plot of land for their farming and there were many out there who were forced to rent land from private land owners.

He said last year in September, the SUPP Central working committee had approached the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sir Adenan Satem, on the landless Chinese and also the squatter areas in Miri.

Ting added that so far two squatter areas, the Kampung Merikan areas where there were 71 families, and the Airport Road, Miri, were solved. He said the Chief minister kept his word to assist these poor people.

On the farmers who need land to plant vegetables, Ting said the Miri Farmer’s Association had worked with them to find out the genuine farmers who need agriculture land for farming. There were two categories, he said, one who had no land and another, who had land which was too small.

He said this year, they received 700 applicants from farmers who need land and this had been forwarded to the Land and Survey for action to be taken.

Ting said Adenan has been gracious and prompt and kept his words to help poor Sarawakians in need.
