The gotong royong spirit of St. Anthony Church members

Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Secretary General, Dato’ Sebastian Ting urged members of the public to help themselves before asking for help as that was the best policy to get things done.

Ting, who was at the St. Anthony Church Pujut Corner yesterday morning with the party’s Publicity Chief, Adam Yii, expressed satisfaction that the people there believed in helping themselves.

There was a gotong royong to level the car park at the St Anthony’s church.  It was muddy before and during the recent rainy season, it caused a lot of inconvenience for church goers.

Ting said it was amazing to see the villagers coming out in full force to do the work themselves with the stones and pebbles provided for by the State government.

“We must rely on ourselves to get things done fast. The State government is kind to provide us with materials and instead of getting contractors to do the job which may cost more, we play a part in it by doing it ourselves. Through this gotong royong, we can be proud of what we have achieved and in the mean time enjoy the spirit of being together. This is what the government wants us to do. Try to improve our lives and be self reliant,” he said.

The St Anthony Church was also constructed through gotong royong. Former SUPP President, Tan Sri Peter Chin and Dato’ Sebastian Ting, through the former Ministry gave a helping hand of RM39, 000 while the rest of the RM41,000 was raised by the church members, who are squatters and are poor financially but rich in their hearts to give, share and love.

Their leader Stanley Temenggong and the residents here are amazing in their team work and spirit. Their strong belief in God has positively motivated them and are always smiling.

After the gotong royong, Ting and Yii joined a lunch with the villagers and Stanley Temenggong.
