Bario heritage event highlights tourism potential, says Datuk Sebastian Ting
The 81st anniversary commemoration of the Z Force parachute landing under Operation Semut has not only revived memories of World War Two, but also highlighted Bario’s growing potential as a heritage and community based tourism destination.
The event, held at Bario Memorial Park, drew participation from various parties including international representatives, adding value to the local tourism sector rooted in history, culture and nature.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak and Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said Bario stands out for its unique historical significance, where the legacy of Operation Semut remains closely connected to the local community.
He noted that the story of bravery shown by Allied forces alongside the Kelabit community can be developed into an authentic and high impact tourism product.
“The people of Bario, especially the Kelabit community, played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the mission by providing shelter, food supplies and local knowledge of the area,” he said when speaking at the International Commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Operation Semut 1945 parachute landing on Friday.
He added that such commemorative events have strong potential to attract both domestic and international tourists, particularly those interested in military history and cultural heritage.
At the same time, the event also strengthens Malaysia’s ties with Allied nations such as Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom through cultural and diplomatic exchanges.
“By remembering history, we not only honour the past but also build bridges for the future,” he said.
Ting stressed that sustainable tourism development in Bario can bring direct benefits to the local community, including creating new economic opportunities in hospitality, handicrafts and tourism services.
He also highlighted that active community involvement in organising such events demonstrates how historical heritage can be preserved while generating economic value for local residents.
The ceremony also paid tribute to veterans and their families, while serving as an important platform to ensure the legacy of Operation Semut continues to be recognised as a valuable tourism asset.
Also present were Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department for Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring Datuk Gerawat Gala, international defence representatives and local community leaders.
