SUPP Youth, Nicholas Wung blasts DAP

Youth Chairman of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching branch, Nicholas Wung blasted State Assemblyman Padungan, Chong Chieng Jen for not upholding his previous firm stance against corruption.

Wung pointed out that Chong failed to make any public statement regarding the recent discharge of corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Stating that the public has not forgotten the 2022 General Election, during which the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Sarawak campaigned vigorously against UMNO and Zahid’s leadership focusing on combating corruption but now DAP is collaborating with individuals who were previously accused of corruption.

Calling on Chong to clarify his stance regarding Zahid’s statement on 2nd February 2025 he claimed that during Cabinet meetings, DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke sat to his right and that over the past 25 months, he had never witnessed DAP opposing Islamic and Malay agendas within the Cabinet.

Wung questioned whether Chong agrees with Zahid’s remarks and urged him to address this issue publicly.

In the past, Wung pointed out that DAP has consistently criticized UMNO’s Malay-first policies and “crutch policies” .

However, he added that now that DAP is part of the ruling government, the five DAP Cabinet ministers have not addressed these issues and have fully accepted the policies proposed by UMNO without raising any objections during Cabinet meetings.

This shift raises concerns about DAP’s commitment to its previous principles and promises.

Describing DAP today as the “Silent Party” is indeed an understatement.

Wung pointed out that Chong Chieng Jen’s claim of fearing that GPS would align with PAS, thus necessitating a “binding” with UMNO to prevent the Islamisation of the country, is illogical and unconvincing to DAP supporters.

Looking at past Sarawak elections, PAS has been consistently defeated, proving that Sarawakians do not support PAS.

Calling Chong’s green terror rhetoric suggested that he has no substantial issues left to engage the public as his strategy lacks substance and fails to conceal DAP’s weaknesses and retreat on critical issues.

On the other hand, Wung said GPS and Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg have consistently opposed extremist ideologies.

“When it comes to grants for churches and temples, the Sarawak government has been proactive in providing funding through the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR). Since its establishment in 2017, UNIFOR has allocated a total of RM385 million to various religious sites, including temples and churches. For instance, in 2024, the Sarawak government, through UNIFOR, provided necessary funding to non-Islamic religious sites, showcasing their commitment to inclusivity, ” Wung explained.

He added that these efforts not only highlight GPS’s strong stance on maintaining religious harmony and cultural diversity but also reflect their tangible support for religious places—something DAP seems unable to match. While DAP remains silent and compromised, GPS continues to take concrete actions that genuinely support and respect all religious communities.
