Miri to build 3 international schools, says Datuk Sebastian Ting
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting reasoned that education is a country’s century-long plan and is crucial to the country’s development and progress to make the country grow.
He said that the Sarawak government eemphasised great importance to the education of Sarawak youths and focus on talent development thus it has committed to implement the policy of allowing Sarawakians to receive free higher education.
He pointed out that the Sarawak government planned to build 5 international schools, two in Kuching and three in Miri, Bintulu and Sibu. In 2026, Sarawak students may be able to receive free higher education in government universities.
Ting who is also the State Assemblyman for Piasau, was talking at the “2024 Free Education Project” event held by IBS College recently.
He disclosed that Miri’s international school will be built on 1634 acres of land, about 30 kilometers and 34 minutes’ drive from Miri City on the Miri-Bin Coastal Highway.
“Now the construction site has been approved, allowing the international secondary school to start construction, the international school offers the British Cambridge level of the General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and will also take the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) examination. Once it is put into operation, each international school will enroll 500 students, each level is divided into 4 classes, each level enrolls 100 students, and each class accommodates 25 students to ensure more effective interaction between teachers and students,” he explained.
On the other hand, Ting said that students from any ethnic group can enroll as long as they meet the criteria. Students from M40 families will receive partial subsidies from the government, while students from B40 families can receive full subsidies.
