Mayor Miri Adam Yii checks flooding issues in Jalan Pantai, Lutong
Miri City Council together with the support rendered by Drainage & Irrigation Department (DID) have drawn up a series of immediate remedial measures to deal with the flooding issue at Jalan Pantai, Lutong whenever high tide coincides with heavy downpour.
The decision was made soon after the combined site visit carried out by Adam Yii, Mayor of Miri City, Mr Abdul Rahman bin Taupek, the Acting City Secretary, Councillors, officers from Council’s Engineering Department as well as officials from DID so as to assess the extent of damages caused by the latest flooding and explore the remedy as the Council has lately received complaints from road users and school authority regarding frequent occurrence of flooding along Jalan Pantai notably at area in close vicinity to SMK Lutong.
Yii said Miri City Council will carry out dredging works at the roadside drain immediately after the completion of the related survey and collaboration sessions with the utility agencies as well as looking for the possibility of a new alternative outlet to release water from the roadside drain. On the part of Drainage & Irrigation Department, they would also carry out dredging works at Muara Sungai Lutong Kecil which is 500 meters in length and it could be completed within this year while the installation of gabion along the coastline is still in the planning stage.
In addition to the above mentioned works, he added that the Council has obtained allocation to carry out the project of raising up the road level along Jalan Pantai which is scheduled to commence in September 2022. The Council anticipates that the project could effectively prevent water from the roadside drain overflowing onto the road surface in the event of high tide coupled with heavy rain. The proposed project is now in the stage of tendering process.
