Greater effort needed to promote Miri, says Ting

MIRI: Greater effort is needed to promote Miri’s tourism products and attractions, said Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting.

He also pointed out that local tour agencies should work out proper travel arrangements for tourists to make sure they feel welcomed and comfortable.

Ting made these remarks after welcoming the Star Clipper cruise ship that brought in some 140 tourists from countries like England, Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, Austria, New Zealand, Russia, Switzerland, United States of America and Canada, including visitors from Malaysia, last Saturday.

The Star Clipper set sail from Singapore to Kuching and Bintulu before arriving here after which it will proceed to Brunei and Kota Kinabalu.

Ting said he was invited to welcome the cruise ship by Troy Yaw, Miri Marina owner.

He added that most of the passengers met regarded the trip to Miri as very interesting.

“We discussed the things that they would like to see and things in their mind that we should put up, which we should be looking into,” he said.

He said it was a let-down that there were no brochures on travel destinations and places of interest available when the visitors arrived.

“So, we are hoping that the local agents will contact us so that we can arrange all these to make sure visitors and tourists coming here feel more comfortable and information are readily available,” Ting emphasised.

Ting noted that most of the tourists on board the ship were seniors who had been working for many years.

“Many of them said that we have very good products here, just that we need to polish and improve them a little bit and this would be wonderful,” Ting pointed out.

“We would look into how to improve so next time they come here we could have earlier knowledge and we could get ready to provide our best services,” he said, adding that Yaw and him were only notified of the visit late Friday.
