Sibu SUPP anniversary dinner

Sibu SUPP come back alive and in high spirit at the party’s 55th anniversary dinner organised by Acting Chairman of Sibu branch, Chieng Buong Toon.

Chieng  was pleasantly surprised and mildly shocked at the overwhelming crowd who come to the Sibu SUPP anniversary dinner at a local restaurant as he wanted to organise only  for 30 tables initially. The number grew to 50 tables and subsequently ended up with 112 tables.

Taking over from former Chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh who jumped ship to join Teras, Chieng in his speech said he was touched by the comrades’ response and attendance, as it is evident that many who had drifted away had returned to the party’s fold.

He said the party was facing a crisis of sorts for two years and is back on its footing.  He thus called to all comrades to help rebuild the party.

“We are all home now. SUPP is not sick. People who take down the signboard of SUPP are sick. They can take down the signboard but they cannot kill our spirit. In the Barisan Nasional spirit, we in SUPP will stand up and be strong again,” he said to the loud clapping of the crowds.

As Sibu SUPP account is zero, Chieng called on to members to donate and assist to rebuild the branch. Hats were passed around and a collection of RM31,000 was collected during the occasion.

During the dinner, Chieng read out a letter from Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. Wong Soon Kai who asked the 50 trustees of the Sibu SUPP building to return the property to SUPP.

Chieng said SUPP will set up 5 more branches and called to all members to start rebuilding. He said with faith and commitment, they will stand tall again.

In a solemn occasion amidst the merriment, a candle was lighted in memory to those comrades who had passed on. In looking back, comrades must remember that the party was formally formed in 1950, starting from Sibu.

On May 15, Wong Soon Koh announced that he and SPDP President, Tan Sri William Mawan, had teamed up to join Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak. Bringing with him were three other State assemblyman, Ranum Mina, Datuk Dr. Jerip Susil and Jonicol Rayong.
