World Heart Day 2018

The Sarawak Heart Foundation is promising another fun celebration on World Heart Day 2018 at Saradise, JalanSutong, Kuching on 23 September 2018.

Its chairman, Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-PertuaNegeri Sarawak, TunPehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud will officiate the launching of the event and take part in the Walk-A-Mile.  About 2,000 people are expected to take part in the celebration.

The vast grounds in a strategic location in Kuching city will be able to accommodate a big crowd. This is what the Foundation would like to see – people who are conscious of heart health and who will take the opportunity to have their blood taken for the tests available on World Heart Day.

The theme for this year’s World Heart Day is “My Heart, Your Heart”. It is about celebrating and connecting like-minded people. Everyone is to make a promise – a promise as an individual to get more active, say no to smoking and eat more healthily.

World Heart Day is a global event that sees individuals, families, communities, organisations and governments around the world take part in activities to take charge of their heart health and that of others. It has the power to unite people from all countries and backgrounds in the fight against cardiovascular disease and inspires and drives international action to encourage heart-healthy living across the world.

The registration fee of RM20 for the Walk-A-Mile comes with the official Walk-A-Mile T-shirt, balloons (first-come, first-serve), breakfast and a ticket for the lucky draw.

Prizes in the lucky draw include the latest Apple Watch Series 3, return air ticket to Ho Chi Minh, smartphones, sports watches, hotel, food and product vouchers, electronic appliances and hampers.

Nestle Products SdnBhd has been the faithful sponsor of the official T-shirt and various products for World Heart Day all these years.

There will be a lot happening on World Heart Day.  The Sarawak Heart Centre will conduct free health screening for the public from 8 am onwards. The health screening covers Body Mass Index, blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol as well as health counselling with doctors.  Members of the public who intend to do the health screening are advised to fast at least six hours before the finger prick blood test screening for more accurate results.

Physiotherapists with the Sarawak Heart Centre will conduct the warm-up session for the participants and conduct ‘Fitness Test’ too. Everyone can join in the line dance and zumba performances at the event.

The Foundation needs the support of everyone to ensure the success of World Heart Day to fight heart disease and to promote heart health.

The Foundation was set up in 1996 as a charity to promote a heart-healthy community in Sarawak.  Core activities include providing financial assistance to poor heart patients in Sarawak for heart treatment in Malaysia, public health exhibitions, health talks as well as free health screenings.

Apart from sponsoring medical treatment for the recuperation and rehabilitation of heart patients in public hospitals in Sarawak, the Foundation also provides grants and sponsorships to hospitals, institutions of higher learning and professionals in the medical field to enable them to carry out research on heart-related diseases.
