Dr Sim: plan on a regionalised hospital service system

The state Health Department is eyeing to have a regionalized hospital service system that would optimise the accessibility to its services.

Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said State Health department is hoping for a regionalised hospital in Sibu, Miri and Kuching to give better services to the people at large.

In his ministerial closing speech, Dr Sim said there were three new hospitals in progress – the 300-bed Petra Jaya Hospital with a scheme value of RM495 million, the 76-bed Lawas Hospital with scheme value of RM27.67 million, and the 108-bed Sri Aman Hospital with scheme value of RM176.28 million.

The actual progress for Petra Jaya Hospital was 42.51 per cent versus the scheduled progress at 78.18 per cent; and Lawas Hospital Phase 2B (project) which includes the development of structure and building is now waiting for the open tender process by the Public Works Department (JKR).  In Sri Aman the hospital progress is at 12 per cent versus the scheduled progress at 18 per cent. It is expected to reach completion in 2018,” he pointed out.

Dr Sim also touched on the progress of Miri Hospital’s new operation theatre which is almost completed at 97.5 per cent.

“Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, the projects approved are the expansion and upgrading of Miri Hospital clinical block, the new neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) at Limbang Hospital, and also the new lift services for SGH and Sibu Hospital.”  he said.

He pointed out that he was aware of Kuching facing a shortage in clinical psychologists.

“In Malaysia, sometimes many of our specialists or medical professionals choose to work in private (sector) because of the salary. In this respect, I notice that many of the DAP YBs have chosen to work at private hospitals, instead of serving at public hospitals. They choose to work in private (sector) and criticise the public (sector).

“If you are sincere about it, go and work at the public hospitals,” he said.
