Dr Sim taking over duty as the Minister of Local Government
Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who took over duty as the Minister of Local Government reminisce his old days as a child when he visited his late father, Tan Sri Sim Kheng Hong whose first appointment was a Minister in the Local government.
Taking over the duty from Second Finance, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh yesterday at Masja, Dr. Sim took it in his stride the duties laid out by Wong.
Telling everyone in the Ministry to work together in the next five years, Dr. Sim said they could make substantial reform to keep up with the public’s expectation. “There should be no usual lie that there is no money. There is no point keeping money for the future while the people suffer.”
Asking the staff to change their attitude to work efficiently , Dr. Sim said he would also look into the issue of promotion. He wanted everyone to give themselves an opportunity to make a difference and leave behind a legacy.
Saying that the council is beyond the drains, rubbish or problematic traffic lights, Dr. Sim said it is important that they all step forward together. He said he will also re-look at the Ordinance 1963 to see its relevancy for today’s society.
Wanting the council to be standardised, Dr. Sim said he wanted to ensure they were all equipped with the same facilities.
Asking Sarawakians to protect the nature that was bestowed to them, Dr. Sim said he would not only look at the river pollution but noise pollution and how to deal with the landfill problem by introducing environment friendly system.
He hoped that the Ministry staff would engage more with their counter part in Kuala Lumpur to be on par with them. “We are still lagging behind our West Malaysia counter part. We need to improve there,” he added.
