Party Elder Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri George Chan: we should unite.
Advisor of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan who is also a former Party President, called to the United People’s Party (UPP) to return to SUPP for the sake of unity.
As an Elder in the party, he would love to see the UPP members who were a breakaway from SUPP to return back to the fold and that is his Chinese New Year wish.
“You can say I invited them to return and all should close rank and do away with petty issues. Then only we can be united and be stronger to serve the people together as a family,” he said.
Chan added that by quarrelling, time were wasted and everyone involved should utilised those energy and time to do better things for members of the public.
It is time to reunite, as supporters and voters will not have respect for a party whose members are quarrelling amongst themselves, Chan continued. “We all know that the state election is just round the corner, and it is time for parties, particularly we in the Barisan, to be strong. And strength can only be found in unity”.
Last May, Minister for Local government and Community Development, Dato’ Sri Wong Soon Koh with Datuk Jerip Susil (Bengoh), Ranum Mina (Opar) and Jonicol Rayong (Engkilili) teamed up with break-away President of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) Tan Sri William Mawan to form Teras. Two months later, they left to form UPP. So far, UPP has their Delegate conference of which Wong was elected to head the UPP.
Since then there has been words of ‘war’ between UPP and SUPP about UPP being BN friendly which irked SUPP leaders who said under the Constitution of Barisan National (BN), the UPP and Teras will not be accepted into the fold of BN as long as one component party opposed to the move.
Chan said it is high time to re-group together again for the sake of Chinese unity. He said he would love to see that happening for everyone’s sake. “There is always a time to compromise and to iron out issues,” he added.
Meanwhile, when contacted, President of SUPP, Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian said SUPP is an inclusive party. “Anyone or any Malaysian can apply to be in SUPP. I will be fair to all concern and there is no one who would be deemed as privileged member. We all must work hard in SUPP for the sake of the rakyat,” he added.
