Up to 40% of RTP Allocation Used Annually to Upgrade Schools in Constituency, says Sebastian Ting

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, said between 30% and 40% of his annual Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) allocation is channelled towards upgrading primary and secondary school facilities in his constituency to improve the learning environment and provide students with better educational opportunities.

He said his constituency receives RM5 million in RTP funding each year, of which about RM1.7 million to RM2 million is prioritised for school infrastructure development.
“Students are the future of our nation and an important asset to society. Therefore, it is necessary to provide them with a more conducive learning environment.

“Schools are among our key priorities. As such, my service team and I have decided to allocate a larger portion of the RTP funds each year to help improve school facilities,” he said.

Ting said the successful implementation of various school upgrading projects was made possible through close cooperation among the Education Department, school boards, principals, parent-teacher associations (PTAs), and teaching staff.

He noted that despite the large number of schools within his constituency, the strong spirit of collaboration among all stakeholders had helped drive school development and benefit more students.
He said this while inspecting two upgrading projects at Miri Vocational College this morning.

According to Ting, the college has so far received a total of RM755,000 in RTP funding secured through his efforts for campus improvement works.
The allocations included RM255,000 in 2021 for floor tiling works, RM100,000 in 2023 to upgrade the girls’ hostel, RM300,000 in 2024 for the construction of a multipurpose hall, and RM100,000 in 2025 to improve facilities at the boys’ hostel.

He added that should the college require further urgent development projects in the future, he would continue to assist in securing funding to gradually enhance campus infrastructure and provide a more comfortable, safe and conducive teaching and learning environment for both students and teachers.
