St Joseph’s Class of ’79 collection for century-old Mill Hill Block

The St Joseph’s school class of 79 showed their generosity when they responded to an appeal for assistance to the 135 years old school which has been in poor condition where some blocks
need to be maintained.

Their representative recently presented a cheque for RM36,161 to the Old Josephians Association president, Datuk Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Sarawak Minister of Local Government and Housing this morning. .

Dr. Sim said that many classrooms have been deemed unsafe prompting one group of Josephians to quickly passed the word — and the hat — around and they managed to raise over RM31,000 in just a few days.

He praised the school for a good kick start of the fund raising for the school.

The official campaign to save the iconic centrepiece of the secondary school’s buildings will begin on September 3, 2017 with the Ora et Labora Run, named after the school’s motto (which is Latin for “Pray and Work”).

The three-storey brick building, designed by the then principal Father Haidegger, was declared open by Rajah Charles Brooke 1894. The 1895 Sarawak Gazette described it as “the biggest building in Sarawak at that time.”
