Dayung Sangon beauty contest
Kuching : The ‘Dayung Sangon’ beauty contest,the first to be organised by the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) in conjunction with this year’s Gawai Dayak celebration has received overwhelming response.
Although the entry date for the contest will only close on April 14, the organising committee has received more than 20 entries for the contest which offers RM7,800 cash prizes.
Chairman of the organising committee Dr Benedict Poris said following the overwhelming response the organiser has decided to hold the preliminary round to select the 12 finalists.
He said the preliminary round will be held on April 26, starting at 9 am at the Eastern Mall, Siburan, adding that members of the public are most welcome to attend.
“Twelve finalists will be vying for the ‘Dayung Sangon’ title during the finale to be held on May 10 at the DBNA multi-purpose hall, Jalan Kumpang, Off Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here,” he said.
Benedict said as the closing date for submission of entries is on April 14, those interested to participate in the beauty contest can still forward their entries to the Organising Chairman, Dayung Sangon 2014 Contest, c/o Dayak Bidayuh Association (DBNA) HQ, Jalan Kumpang, Off Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, 93712 Kuching.

Kendy said the contestants must be single Bidayuh ladies (either parent must be Bidayuh), age between 18 to 28 years of age as at May 10, 2014 and at least five feet tall.
Contestants are required to attach with the contest form two pieces of their 4R sized (full body) photographs.
She said contestants will be responsible for their own make-up, traditional costumes, own transport to and from the contest venue.
“Those who have won other state/national level beauty pageant contests are not qualified to enter the contest,” she said.
Judges decisions will be final, said Kendy, adding that contestants would be judged on their beauty (50%), intelligence (20%), costume (20%) and poise (10%).
“The Dayung Sangon champion will walk away with RM3,000 cash prize while the first and second runner-up winners will win RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively, besides trophies.
“There will also be nine consolation prizes at RM200 each and all finalists will receive hampers sponsored by Nestle Products,” she said.
He said all contestants are required to wear dress/skirts at knee length only with high heel shoes during preliminary round while all finalists must wear full and complete Bidayuh traditional costumes with accessories.
All finalists are required to wear high heel shoes not more than 2 ½ inches high and during the rehearsals they are required to wear black pants and white T shirts.
Meanwhile dinner tickets for the finale evening are now on sale at RM1,000, RM850, RM500 and RM300.
